Crafting Soarvo - A Next-Gen Geospatial Platform

Soarvo

Founded by Alan Browne and Paul Brodin an engineer and a software developer with decades of geospatial experience. Soarvo is all about making geospatial data management simple and accessible for professionals and their customers across various industries.

The company is on a journey to turn geospatial data into actionable insights, optimising real-world outcomes for businesses and communities alike.

Overview

When Soarvo set out to build their revolutionary 3D geospatial platform, they knew they needed a partner who could think big and build even bigger. Their vision was clear: design a modern, cloud-native platform that would transform how professionals like surveyors, drone operators, and urban planners visualize, analyze, and share complex geospatial data.

They needed a solution that could integrate diverse data sources like consumer-range drones, CAD systems, and 3D scanners, into one seamless, user-friendly interface. And they needed it to be fast, scalable, and secure. So they turned to Sonalake.

The challenge involved developing a comprehensive multi-tenant platform within an accelerated timeline, requiring:

  • Native support for diverse geospatial data formats
  • Seamless integration with an existing 3D visualisation engine
  • Enterprise-grade scalability and security
  • Intuitive interfaces for both technical and non-technical users

Design Innovation

Sonalake conducted a detailed evaluation of the product vision, expected users, technical knowledge, asset types, and workflows to come up with innovative product design ideas:

  • Centralised workspace: Moving siloed, task-based functions into one consolidated, highly-functional workspace with everything at user’s fingertips for quick and easy access, while making cause-and-effect more explicit at the interface level
  • Neumorphic approach: An interface that feels like it exists in a tactile space, with elements that lift and sink when interacted with, creating a link between the digital data and the physical environments they map to
  • Distinct identity: Creating a unique identity and visual language for Soarvo that differentiates it from competitors in the same space

Ultimately, the design delivers a cool, unified, visually engaging, and easy-to-use platform tailored for both technical experts and everyday users.

Key Challenges

  • Multi-source data integration: Harmonizing disparate geospatial formats with varying structures and semantics into a unified 3D visualisation environment
  • Cross-functional accessibility: Designing interfaces that serve domain experts and casual users simultaneously
  • Custom domain modelling: Enabling tenant-specific business logic implementation without compromising platform integrity
  • Enterprise-grade requirements: Delivering strict tenant isolation, fine-grained access control, and elastic scalability while maintaining cost efficiency

Solution Architecture

The core design principles for the solution architecture were as follows:

  • Cloud-first architecture: Full-stack implementation leveraging AWS managed services
  • Microservices approach: .NET-based services with domain-driven design boundaries
  • Event-driven design: Applying publish-subscribe and transactional outbox patterns to enable reliable, decoupled inter-service communication
  • Progressive enhancement: Iterative development with continuous user feedback integration

A range of tools and AWS services were employed to deliver the components of the platform within a secure scalable cloud architecture, including frontend, core services, data processing. security, observability and messaging.

Outcomes

The collaborative development approach combining Soarvo domain expertise with Sonalake engineering delivered:

  • Accelerated time-to-market: Proof-of-concept validated architecture within the first sprint
  • Scalable foundation: Elastic architecture supporting petabyte-scale datasets
  • Domain flexibility: Custom feature type designer for tenant-specific modelling
  • Operational efficiency: Automated ETL pipelines, reducing manual processing by 70%
  • Knowledge transfer: Structured handover processes ensured Soarvo’s team gained ownership of the platform, and secured its proper maintenance and evolution
